If you are a fan of chemical exfoliation, you may have heard of AHAs and BHAs, two types of acids that can remove dead skin cells and improve your skin’s texture, tone, and appearance. But did you know that there is another type of acid that can do the same, but with less irritation and more hydration? Meet PHAs, or polyhydroxy acids, the newest and gentlest chemical exfoliants on the market. In this blog post, I will explain what PHAs are, how they work, and how to use them in your skin care routine.
What are PHAs?
PHAs, or polyhydroxy acids, are a group of chemical
exfoliants that belong to the same family as AHAs, or alpha hydroxy acids.
However, PHAs have a larger molecular structure than AHAs, which means they
cannot penetrate as deeply into the skin, but rather work on the surface layer.
This makes them less likely to cause irritation, sensitivity, or inflammation,
and more suitable for sensitive or dry skin types. Some of the most common PHAs are
gluconolactone, lactobionic acid, and galactose.
How do PHAs work?
PHAs work by breaking down the bonds that hold the dead skin
cells together, and allowing them to shed more easily. This can result in
smoother, brighter, and more even skin, as well as unclogged pores and reduced
acne. PHAs can also stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, the
proteins that keep your skin firm and elastic, and fight the signs of aging. Moreover, PHAs have hydrating and
antioxidant properties, which means they can moisturize and protect your skin
from dryness and free radical damage.
How to use PHAs in your skin care routine?
PHAs are generally safe and gentle for all skin types, but
especially for those with sensitive or dry skin. However, there are some tips
and recommendations on how to use PHAs in your skin care routine, such as:
Choose the right product: PHAs can be found in various types
of skin care products, such as cleansers, toners, serums, creams, and masks.
You should choose a product that suits your skin type and needs, and that
contains an effective concentration of PHAs, usually between 2% and 10%. You can also look for products that
contain other beneficial ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or
antioxidants, that can complement PHAs’ effects.
Apply the product correctly: You should apply PHAs to your
clean and dry skin, and follow the instructions on the label. You can use PHAs
in the morning and/or at night, depending on your preference and goals. You should also use a sunscreen during the day, to protect your
skin from sun damage and enhance PHAs’ benefits.
Be patient and consistent: You should use PHAs regularly and
consistently, to see the best results. It may take several weeks or months to
notice the changes in your skin, depending on your skin condition and the
product you use. You should also monitor your skin’s reaction and tolerance, and
adjust the frequency and amount of PHAs as needed.
Some of the benefits of PHA are:
1. It
can remove dead skin cells and improve your skin’s texture, tone, and
appearance, by unclogging pores, reducing dullness, and enhancing the absorption
of other skin care products.
2. It can boost the production of collagen and elastin, the
proteins that keep your skin firm and elastic, and fight the signs of aging,
such as wrinkles, sagging, and pigmentation.
3. It can hydrate and protect your skin from dryness and free
radical damage, as it has moisturizing and antioxidant properties.
4. It
can calm and soothe your skin, especially if you have inflammatory skin
conditions, such as acne, rosacea, or eczema, as it can reduce redness,
swelling, and irritation.
PHA
is generally safe and gentle for all skin types, but especially for those with
sensitive or dry skin, as it does not penetrate as deeply into the skin as
other acids, and causes less irritation, sensitivity, or inflammation. To use PHA in your skin care routine, you should choose
a product that contains an effective concentration of PHA, usually between 2%
and 10%, and apply it to your clean and dry skin once or twice a week,
depending on your skin’s tolerance and response. You should also use a sunscreen during the day, to protect your
skin from sun damage and enhance PHA’s benefits.
